Spooky Season Nostalgia: Iconic Halloween Ads Through the Years

By: Alexa Spencer

The spooky season has arrived. Meaning horror movie marathons, haunted houses, spooky music, candy, pumpkin carving, and pumpkin painting. As we approach Halloween, is there anything you notice or have nostalgia about in the advertisement world? Maybe it is your yearly favorite Halloween advertisements that put you in the spooky spirit. Several well-known iconic Halloween advertisements create buzz for the spooky season. Let’s take a trip down memory lane, reminiscing on our favorite Halloween advertisements throughout the years.

Is anyone a fan of clowns? Burger King had their moment! Free Whoppers were offered to customers in 2017 to whoever came into the restaurant dressed up as a clown. This was an iconic advertisement as Burger King made a mockery of their competition (McDonald’s) mascot, Ronald McDonald. Not many people are fans of clowns, but many are fans of Snickers! In 2010, Snickers had their hilarious, iconic advertisement featuring the perfect Halloween candy. The hilarious advertisement had two children dressed up as a creepy adult woman in a grocery store, shoving bags and bags of candy into another woman’s shopping cart.

People sure do love Snickers, but Reece’s is also a worldwide favorite. In 2019, Reeces’ launched an advertisement that leaned into a classic creepy haunted house featuring spooky music, lightning, and whispering. Whisperings of “Do you want a piece?” As the camera moves throughout the advertisement, the audience expects a creepy reveal, which is terrifying as it turns out to be Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup! All three of these advertisements help their audience get into the spooky mood as they promote and place their product throughout the holiday season.

This past Thursday, we held our first event of the semester, as we did pumpkin logo painting. Our creative juices were flowing as we painted pumpkins, getting into the Halloween spirit. Having the opportunity to reminisce and remember personal favorite Halloween advertisements. We had a great time taking a break from school and work life as we shifted our creative minds to pumpkin painting. To end the spooky night, we had a bonfire as we roasted delicious s’mores and had good talks. It was a great first event of the semester, and we thank all those who made it great!
